Recognitions and Awards
33. Recognize 5th Grade Students Selected for All State Chorus - Superintendent Van Zant

Minutes: 

The following 5th grade students auditioned for and were accepted into the All State Chorus:

  • Shelby McKinney - Lake Asbury Elementary School
  • Nicolette Clay - Plantation Oaks Elementary School
  • Sophie Scureman-Stoops - Plantation Oaks Elementary School

The Superintendent presented the students with certificates in recognition of their accomplishments.   Shelby McKinney was not present.

34. Recognize Outstanding School Volunteers - Gavin Rollins

Minutes: 

The following district winners were recognized for going above and beyond with time spent volunteering in Clay's schools and classrooms:

  • Student Volunteer of the Year - Aser Civilus (Orange Park High volunteer)
  • Adult Volunteer of the Year - Jan Grokett (Fleming Island High and Montclair Elementary volunteer)
  • Senior Volunteer of the Year - Sharon Thomson (Middleburg Elementary volunteer)

Gavin Rollins, Public Information Officer, introduced the volunteer winners and presented them with certificates of appreciation.

35. Recognize Clay High Swim Relay Team - Coach Justin Faulkner

Minutes: 

Clay High School Swim Coach, Justin Faulkner, recognized the Relay Team, who finished the season as State Runner-Up. 

 

Boys A Relay Team finished first in two relays (Caeleb Dressel, Grady Heath, Matt Bonna, Dakota Mahaffey) and qualified in the 400 Free Relay as All American-Automatic consideration.

 

Caeleb Dressel is a 7-time State Champion currently holding 7 National Age Group Records, including Michael Phelps’ former record in the 100 free for the 17-18 age group.

36. Recognize Orange Park Historical Society's Veterans Day essay contest winner - Tiffany Outman

Minutes: Mrs. Outman, principal at S. Bryan Jennings Elementary School, and Extended Studies teacher, Angela Love, spoke briefly about the class writing assignment pertaining to Veterans Day.  The contest winner, Luke Gaskins, was introduced and he read aloud his essay for the School Board and audience members.  Superintendent Van Zant presented Luke with a special keepsake, a military Challenge Coin.

37. National Education Support Professionals Day - Teresa Dixon

Minutes: Ms. Dixon, who is a member of the Clay Education Support Professionals Association, spoke in support of ESP's and the role they play in the education of the district's students.  Under the Consent Agenda, the School Board approved a proclamation recognizing November 20, 2013, and each future Wednesday of American Education Week as Education Support Professional Day.

The following staff members explained their role to help implement the Instructional Division's and the district's initiatives to "Innovate, Engage, and Empower" students.  This effort will include a high school redesign plan which will begin with the 2014-2015 school year.

Ms. Graham and Mrs. McKinnon both expressed concern about the termination clause and a conflict of interest with the attorney writing his own contract.  Following discussion, the following sentences were stricken from the contract in paragraph 10, Termination:

  • Failure by the School Board to notify the Attorney of its intent to terminate this Agreement as set forth herein shall result in the extension of this agreement for one (1) additional year.
  • The Attorney shall be entitled to seek administrative and judicial review of any termination action by the Board.

Mrs. Studdard asked for clarification of conflicting information in paragraph 3 of the contract.  Mr. Bickner confirmed that termination requires sixty (60) days written notice, not 90.

Mrs. McKinnon expressed concern about a conflict of interest.  Mrs. Kerekes stated that Sabrina Gaston is employed as an independent contractor.

  • Appropriate sufficient funding, in addition to the FEFP, that will fully fund technology needs, including funds necessary for infrastructure, hardware, software, training, online testing, virtual instruction, digital textbooks, data management, and other technology needs.

  • Laura Gorgus - thanked the Board for reporting possible violations by the superintendent and spoke in favor of an appointed superintendent
  • Cheryl McDavitt - spoke about peace and reconciliation for the sake of the students and wanted to see an outside professional mediator brought in to help resolve differences 
  • Kelly Griffis - spoke in support of ESP day

Superintendent Van Zant noted that Mr. Al Neisi, art teacher at Ridgeview High School, had displayed student art work in the board room.  Mrs. Kerekes suggested asking a different school to rotate art work each month.

Minutes: 

Mrs. Bullock stated she believes it is everyone's responsibility to work together and that differences of opinion do not necessarily reflect a personal attack.

Mrs. Kerekes attended and commented on Doctors Inlet Elementary School's family night.

Mrs. Studdard commented on the recent Master Board training, school events honoring veterans, the recent Northeast Florida School Boards Coalition meeting, and the Clay County Health Fair held in October.
